It’s no mystery that regular exercise will let you get into great shape. A consistent exercise system will work wonders for your physical health and wellbeing. Over the course of the pandemic, many people have learned about the wonderful benefits of regular exercise on mental health and wellness. These advantages are far-reaching ranging from better sleep to memory improvement to stress relief. However, what many people don’t know, is that regular exercise will boost their immune system. In the midst of new variants of COVID-19, very few things we have are as important as our immune systems.

While scientists and researchers haven’t pinpointed the exact reason why physical activity and exercise boost the immune system, they have several theories. The four dominant theories are:

  1. Physical activity flushes the bacteria out of the lungs and airways. This can reduce your chance of getting a virus or illness.
  2. Physical activity influences change in your body’s white blood cells, the defense cells that fight disease, and antibodies so that these defense cells can circulate throughout your body quicker and more efficiently. This leads scientists to believe that this alerts your body earlier to the presence of potential illnesses.
  3. While exercising your body’s temperature rises, and this increase in temperature could prevent bacteria from growing. This could also help your body fight against infection more successfully. This theory is similar to how a fever works to combat illness.
  4. During and after exercise, your body slows down releasing stress-inducing hormones. Lower stress typically leads to less of a chance to catch an illness.

However, remember that these are unproven theories. This isn’t fact until there’s proven evidence to fully support these claims. There is a clear connection between exercise and a stronger immune system, but, as of now, that exact connection is just unfound.
