As we leave a global pandemic and the world reopens, many people have slacked or been unable to regularly go to a gym. However, many people have learned about how much a walk outside in the sun, a bike ride, or a jog around the neighborhood can do for their mental health.

The UK’s Mental Health Foundation shows that the benefits of physical activity are far-reaching. There’s an extensive list of benefits for getting outside and moving besides getting in good physical condition:

  • A goal or sense of purpose
  • Meeting new people
  • Less tension, stress, and mental fatigue
  • Natural boost of energy
  • Less feelings of frustration
  • More focus and motivation
  • A healthy appetite
  • Fun and enjoyment
  • A better sense of calm

A study published in BioMedCentral links poor physical fitness, specifically cardiorespiratory fitness and grip strength, to common mental disorders, specifically anxiety and depression. After a 7-year long study, they found that individuals with the lowest level of physical fitness had nearly double the odds of developing depression and 1.5 times as likely to develop anxiety. The study concluded that it’d be a good idea to incorporate a combination of aerobic and resistance strategies into public health strategies.

Now this doesn’t mean you need to go to the gym and throw around double your bodyweight on the squat rack or run miles a day. All this means is that if you’re able to go out and physically move around every day, then you’re positioning yourself for a healthier future. The American Heart Association recommends being physically active for 2.5 hours a week for an adult. Shockingly, they also say that only 1 in 5 adults actually reach this amount of physical activity a week.
