Frozen food is a controversial topic for many people. For some it’s a taboo, but for others it’s a regular meal. The convenience is undeniable. Just come home, take the meal out of the freezer, and heat it up. Quick, simple, and easy. Exactly what most people want to do after a long day at work. However, frozen meals have always been questioned on the basis of their health. A common belief is that the nutrients and vitamins are lost in the freezing process, however, this isn’t necessarily true. Here are some common beliefs and benefits about frozen food.

One of the largest worries many people have is that the freezing process saps out the nutrients and vitamins of the food. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has stated that this isn’t always the case, “Generally, frozen foods retain their vitamins and minerals and there is no change to the carbohydrate, protein or fat content. In some cases, frozen foods have more vitamins and minerals compared to fresh because fresh foods lose vitamins and minerals over time while freezing preserves nutrients.” A study showed that after five days frozen produce retains more nutrients and vitamins than produce in the refrigerator.

Another positive on the side of frozen food is the complete lack of expiration date. As long as something is frozen properly then it can be safe to eat a decade later. The flavor has probably taken a hit, but it won’t make you sick despite it’s old age. If you have freezer space or like to plan ahead (far ahead) then freezing food months in advance is a great way to save money and free up time and mental energy far in the future.

However, this doesn’t mean that all frozen food is healthy and the best dinner move for you. It’s important to be aware of the packaged frozen food you’re buying. Read the nutritional labels and any information presented on the packaging. At a store, odds are there’s much more unhealthy frozen food available than healthy frozen food at the supermarket. Keep your head on a swivel and be aware of what you’re getting!
