We need food to live. We need to eat to be healthy and have functioning bodies. This is common sense, but the hard part is keeping balance and not shifting into unhealthy eating habits. One way to look at this, as put forth by the University of Minnesota, is to look at each piece of food you’re eating as a morsel of information being fed into your body. Too little information or too much information and our body cannot properly process what to accurately do with the nourishment. This can lead to malnourishment, being over/underweight, and disease.

It’s important to understand exactly what food does in our bodies. Food is made up of many different kinds of nutrients. The Department of Health describes nutrients as, “compounds in foods essential to life and health, providing us with energy, the building blocks for repair and growth and substances necessary to regulate chemical processes.” The six major nutrients are: carbohydrates, lipids (fats), proteins, vitamins, minerals, water. Here’s a breakdown from the University of Minnesota on examples of what functions and jobs essential nutrients provide the information for:

Immune function: vitamin A, vitamin E, zinc, folic acid, vitamin B-6, riboflavin, magnesium, selenium, vitamin C

Nerve impulses: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, vitamin B6, folic acid, B-12, copper, vitamin C

Metabolism: potassium, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, magnesium, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin C

Tissue repair and formation: vitamin A, vitamin E, copper, riboflavin, magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin C

As you can see there’s a wide variety of different nutrients used for different functions, so as long as you’re mindful of what you’re eating then you can have a healthy diet and provide the correct information for your system.
