There’s a strange mixture of anxiety and relief in the air. People are, rightfully, ecstatic at the long-awaited solace of leaving our homes and returning to a more normal life. However, the Delta variant is still running rampant, and, in some areas, mask mandates are returning. Many concerts and music events are requiring a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination for entry. So how is Miami-Dade county doing, especially with schools reopening for in-person classes again?

According to COVID Act Now, a COVID-19 risk & vaccine tracker for the United States, Florida, as a whole, is sitting at a 63% vaccination rate, while Miami-Dade county is much higher at an 81% vaccination rate. Regardless of how high the vaccination rate is, it’s still quite dangerous because of the Delta variant. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, if you’re vaccinated, you can still contract the Delta variant, but the infection is more than likely to be significantly less severe. The danger is that you’re capable of spreading the virus to others, even if you aren’t aware that you have the virus. This, combined with a large number of unvaccinated individuals, is what’s leading to another spike of cases in the pandemic.

Considering this information, it’s scary knowing that schools are reopening for in-person classes once again. Miami-Dade County public schools have unveiled their guidelines they will be following with an emphasis on collaboration with the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), as well as the continued refinement of these guidelines as the pandemic progresses. Parents are being asked to ensure that their children are not sick, with or without COVID-19, by observing this health screening before sending them to school. The school system has released a video detailing safety protocols that include masks requirements for all students, teachers, employees, visitors, and volunteers, as well as enhanced sanitation and social distancing

This is an uneasy situation and time. School is supposed to be a safe space for children to go and grow. That’s why the Miami-Dade public school system is implementing rigorous protocols surrounding COVID-19. It’s imperative to keep your immune system firing on all cylinders.
